Sephiroth Joins Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Thank God)

In an attempt to redeem itself in the wake of a slew of terrible Smash Ultimate DLC fighter choices, Nintendo has announced Sephiroth, from Final Fantasy VII (and one of the most iconic video game villains), will join the fight as a playable character. If you read my last article on Nintendo’s methods for choosing DLC fighters, this fits with their overall framework where each fighter’s pass has one (two if lucky) characters that players actually want, and then the rest are whatever garbage Nintendo feels like peddling or promoting.

Sephiroth being in smash was a common joke among internet trolls looking to play with Smash fans’ hopes, only to have the prospect of Sephiroth be sad misinformation. And, if you were like me, you had to check once, twice, thrice (twenty times) that this is not joke perpetrated by trolls.

The next update for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is scheduled for December 18th, 2020, but Smash updates are sometimes early. Nintendo can’t afford to screw up a character like Sephiroth, so I imagine he will be one of the more powerful long range / high delay characters in the game. This really feels like a dream come true and I’m so excited to give him a try when the new patch is released!

Check out this trailer below. It really does Sephiroth justice:
